This is the third sonata from Johann Georg Herzog’s collection of seven Fest-Sonaten, each dedicated to a major feast of the church year.
Representing the Passiontide (Lent), this four-movement work is deeply reflective in character.
The third movement features a beautiful setting of the chorale "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele." While often used for Communion, Herzog utilizes it here as a penitential meditation. For this recording, I made use of melody couplers to help the cantus firmus sing clearly above the accompaniment using the Solo Horn —a technical first for me.
The movements are
00:00 Andante sostenuto
01:52 Fuge
07:13 Andante - Ruhig und getragen
13:45 Choral
