“Christ ist erstanden” (BWV 627)
From the Orgelbüchlein
J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
Christ ist erstanden is an ancient German Easter hymn, thought to be the oldest surviving liturgical hymn in the German language. It appears, in both original and translated forms, in hundreds of Christian hymnals.
Uniquely among the Orgelbüchlein works, this piece sets all three stanzas of the chorale. Each verse receives its own musical treatment, forming a triptych depiction of the resurrection.
Played on the 1965 Klais organ at St. Aegidien church in Braunschweig, Germany. The instrument was virtualized for Hauptwerk by Pipeloops.
Central to my virtual setup is a former pipe organ console that I converted to MIDI for use with Hauptwerk. The console was originally built by Walcker Orgelbau's North American representative, Werner Knoch, and installed at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Stratford, Ontario.
