Samuel Wesley (1766-1837), son of the hymn writer Charles Wesley, was a child prodigy and was playing the organ for church services by the age of seven. Despite his erratic and irascible nature, he attracted a considerable reputation both as a performer and composer, writing many fine voluntaries for organ as well as string symphonies, concertos, and choral works.
