Elias Nikolaus Ammerbach (1530–1597) was a leading Renaissance music theorist and organist; he studied in Leipzig and later served as organist at St. Thomas Church there. With his magnum opus *Orgel oder Instrument Tabulatur*, published in 1571, he released the first printed collection of organ music. This collection contains groundbreaking instructions on performance practice and arrangements of dances, songs, and motets. Due to its wide range of possibilities, the organ was his preferred musical instrument, particularly because the playing techniques could also be applied to other keyboard instruments. No original compositions of his are known; the collection of his tabulatures consists of works by various composers of his time. The pieces on this recording are taken from the second edition of his opus, published in 1583. The third song, “Wie schön blüht uns der Maye,” is attributed to his contemporary Jakob Meiland.
