| Description: | Vaclav Jan Krtitel Tomasek 1774-1850 was an Austrian-Bohemian composer of the Classical era. He was a composer, singer, pianist and teacher and the leading musician in Czechia known as 'The Musical Pope of Prague' which was where he lived, though he was educated in Austria. He wrote choral, orchestral and piano music as well as lieder, and was a friend of Beethoven and Goethe. He is not very well known today, his most famous work being the Requiem in C minor, a very fine composition indeed, as is his Missa Solemnis Op. 81. His style is influenced by Mozart's later works, as is manifest in this short, but majestic fugue - the only composition he wrote for organ that I know of: if anyone listening to this knows of others, please let me know! For this piece I chose the wonderful Schwerin Dom organ, a German early symphonic instrument built by Friedreich Ladegast, and sampled for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi - the perfect organ for this music. |
