Composer: Diemer, Emma Lou
Sample Set: BMPC Rieger
Software: Hauptwerk IX
Genre: Modern
Description:
Emma Lou Diemer's "Innsbruck" comes from "Celebration: Seven Hymn Settings for Organ" (1975), a collection written during the composer's middle creative period. The set occupies a fascinating place within her output, standing between the practical church music of her early years and the broader stylistic synthesis of her later works.

Diemer described Celebration as an attempt to create different moods according to the spirit of each hymn. Rather than functioning as traditional chorale preludes, these works are best understood as miniature tone poems, using familiar melodies as points of departure for distinctive emotional and sonic landscapes.

The Renaissance melody INNSBRUCK, composed by Heinrich Isaac around 1495, remains largely intact throughout the piece. Around it, however, Diemer creates an atmosphere of remarkable harmonic color. The hymn tune appears in the pedal as brief, detached phrases separated by silence, while the manuals weave a shimmering fabric of slowly shifting seventh-chord sonorities. The result is a contemplative and deeply expressive meditation that transforms a familiar tune without ever obscuring its identity.

One of Diemer's great gifts was her ability to bring contemporary harmonic language into the everyday world of church music. Although intended for practical use, she never wrote down to working organists. The technical demands appear modest, but successful performance requires careful rhythmic control, balance between independent musical layers, and sensitivity to color and atmosphere.

This recording was originally prepared to help a fellow organist learn the piece. In the process, I was reminded just how beautifully Diemer combines accessibility, craftsmanship, and expressive depth in even her smallest works.
