Composer: Speth, Johann
Sample Producer: OrganArt Media
Sample Set: 1766 Riepp Dreifaltigkeits Organ, Ottobeuren, Germany
Software: Hauptwerk VIII
Genre: Baroque
Description:
Johann(es) Speth (1664–1728) was a South German Baroque composer and organist at Augsburg Cathedral.
Speth himself claimed not to have composed the cycle of works titled "Ars magna consoni et dissoni", which consists of 10 toccatas and was first published in 1693. However, given the striking similarity in the musical style of the pieces, this claim appears unfounded (even though he had written some of them as early as 1680); musicologists suspect that the composer attempted to conceal his authorship behind a veil of anonymity.
The introduction and fugue of his sixth toccata (or "sixth musical field of flowers") possess a pastoral character, contrasting with majestic Adagio movements.

Naturally, this music is best showcased on a South German Baroque organ; for me, the finest example is the Trinity Organ in the Ottobeuren Abbey Basilica, built by Karl Joseph Riepp in 1766.
