No.1, Cinq Pièces Faciles pour Orgue ou Piano (Leduc 1987).
This short piece was written for Alain’s six-year-old sister Marie-Claire Alain to play on the organ at the Abbaye de Valloires ‘(pour que Poucette joue l'orgue de Valloires)’. Each note is fingered for her and a timing given as 1’30”. ‘Poucette’ was Jehan’s nickname for his little sister Marie-Claire who was born on 10th August 1926, 100 years today!
James Higson once asked his organ teacher Marie-Claire, ‘Weren’t you thrilled that your brother wrote a piece for you when you were a little girl?’ And she said, ‘No! I cried because it was too hard for me!’
