| Description: | Boris Kaluzhny (often published as B. Kaluzhny) is a largely obscure composer whose biographical details remain undocumented, best known for his Cinq morceaux pour piano (Five Pieces for Piano). These romantic-era character pieces, which include the popular "Petite Valse," continue to be circulated in historic P. Jurgenson and Wilhelm Hansen editions.
The origins and life of this composer are heavily shrouded in mystery, with historians and sheet music archives noting that precise biographical dates or overarching catalog information are currently unavailable.
His most documented surviving work is "5 Morceaux" (Five Pieces) for piano, published around 1900.
Connection to Reinhold Glière
Kaluzhny is prominently immortalised in classical music history through the famous Russian/Soviet composer Reinhold Glière. Glière dedicated one of his well-known chamber works, 8 Pieces for Violin and Cello, Op. 39 (1909), specifically to Boris Kaluzhny. This dedication occurred during a period when Glière was actively teaching at the Gnesin Institute, suggesting Kaluzhny may have been a colleague, student, or musician within Glière's immediate artistic circle.
