| Description: | Leopold Mozart (1719–1787)—the Augsburg-born german violinist and composer—devoted his music-filled life in Salzburg first as a violinist and valet in the service of the cathedral chapter, and later as vice-court Kapellmeister to the archbishops of Salzburg. He was also the teacher and manager of his two “Wunderkinder” Maria Anna and Wolfgang, whom he purposefully promoted and marketed. His sacred works, symphonies, solo concertos, and chamber music belong to the pre-Classical period. He published the collection of 12 musical pieces titled “Der Morgen und der Abend” (Morning and Evening) together with Johann Ernst Eberlin for the famous mechanical organ, the “Hornwerk” (also known as the “Salzburg Bull”), at Hohensalzburg Fortress. The music is still played there every day in the morning and evening. The third movement, “Für den Merz" (for March) features a chorale by Augustin Ebler (1502), for which Mozart composed six variations.
