My first reaction to Willan's metronome mark was: "This is WAY too slow!!!!!"
As I played it, I thought: "This IS the right tempo!"
I have a thing about metronome marks, and I played all of these movements pretty much right on the speed Willan indicated... ;-)
The name "Jubilante" would make you think of something quick, but in reality, this is a VERY grand processional.
It starts out fairly big but reduces a bit in the middle. After which, it's a continuous build up to the end, culminating in ABSOLUTELY Full Organ.
I say "absolutely," since this is the first time I've used the Solo Tuba Clarion 4' (just an extension of the 8') for the final chord, and it is a BIG sound!!!
I've enjoyed learning and playing these works, and I think I'll see what other Willan pieces that I have lying around... ;-)
