Ernst Levy (1895–1981) — Prelude on “The Sabbath Bride” (1961) for organ
Ernst Levy (1895–1981) was worn in Basel, Switzerland and educated educated there and in Paris. He was active as a highly regarded virtuoso pianist, composer, and teacher. In 1941 he came to the United States and taught at a number of colleges and universities, including the New England Conservatory, the University of Chicago, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Levy returned to Switzerland in 1966 following his retirement from teaching. He composed many works including 15 orchestral symphonies, along with numerous chamber, choral, and solo pieces.
Levy wrote nine organ pieces, of which this very brief prelude is the shortest. It was written in 1961 for an anthology of Jewish service music for organ edited by Samuel Adler.
