David Lang (b. 1957) — ordinary (2012) for organ
American composer David Lang (b. 1957) was educated at Stanford University, the University of Iowa, and Yale University. Together with Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon, he founded Bang on a Can in 1987. His work “the little match girl passion” was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Lang has composed many works on commission from the world’s leading musical ensembles including the Kronos Quartet, Paul Hillier’s Theater of Voices, BBC Symphony, eighth blackbird, Santa Fe Opera, New York Philharmonic, and Boston Symphony. His music in all forms is performed across the globe with great frequency and can be heard on numerous recordings on the Sony Classical, Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, BMG, Point, Chandos, Argo/Decca, and Cantaloupe labels.. Lang was Musical America’s 2013 Composer of the Year and served as Carnegie Hall’s Debs Composer’s Chair for 2013–14. Lang’s style is generally described as “post-minimalist,” and displays influences from a number of different musical genres (classical and pop). While the surface of the music is usually quite accessible, many of his works are put together by means of very strict formal processes.
