The melody of this lullaby is quite close to the German christmas song "Zu Bethlehem geboren", which was first published in 1637, but the melody itself can be tracked back to a French collection of 1599. In the 19th century, Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio borrowed the melody of the christmas song for this cradle song. Johannes Brahms used it in 1858 for "Sandmännchen" in his 15 Volks-Kinderlieder (No. 4).
Collum's setting (5-6 part with double pedal) is a real gem. The score is available on imslp.
