Description:
Bernard Wayne Sanders (b. 1957) — Sonata da camera (2013) for organ

1. Rapsodia
2. Ricercare
3. Scherzo
4. Rondo

“Sonata da camera” (2013) was written for Carson Cooman. It is music of an intimate, chamber character, and uses only two stops (8’ principal and 4’ flute). The opening “Rapsodia” begins with a chorale-like theme based on interlocking perfect 5ths. The middle section develops these harmonies in a more energetic texture, particularly featuring a bouncy ostinato rhythm. The chorale-like music returns again to close the movement. “Ricercare” is slow and expressive, with intertwining contrapuntal voices that move through several key areas. “Scherzo” is brief, with consistently changing rhythms. The concluding “Rondo” is joyous and light-hearted, and brings back some of the ideas from the earlier movements.

Bernard Wayne Sanders (b. 1957) was born in DePere, Wisconsin and was educated at St. Norbert College, Wichita State University, and the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg, Germany. Sanders has been an active church musician now for many years in Germany, currently serving parishes in Tuttlingen. As a composer, he has published many works and composed the award-winning piece “Ornament of Grace,” sponsored by the American Guild of Organists as part of a performance by organists worldwide in 2008.
