Description: | This is the last upload in of my contemporary-composers-of-preludes-to-the-Psalms series.
I've done 12, and as there are 150 psalm, that is obviously only a small selection.
The prelude compositions themselves are all from the twentieth century and the matching harmonizations also bear the mark of that time.
I'm from a former generation myself: no doubt there are dozens of young organists playing and composing in the Netherlands at the moment, but somebody else will have to upload some of that then.
The preludes I uploaded are from a time, when being a church organist was still a real full-time profession, playing, teaching, playing concerts etc.
Secularization is a big issue in the Netherlands since about 1970. Catholic and protestant churches are closing down at an alarming rate, often being replaced by other forms of religion.
Also the tradional church services with organ, preacher and liturgical elements are no longer standard.
For organists this means it is getting very hard to make a living of their profession; they have to be very creative.
Here on the Concert Hall for instance there are members having a "real job" like being a businessman or lawyer, doctor, teacher or whatever; having studied the organ professionaly out of interest on the side.
I wish all organists every possible luck in the future; they'll certainly need it.
Please look at one of the former uploads for info on van Dommele. |
