Description: | James Beale (1924–2010) — Pastorale, op. 25 (1958) for organ
James Beale (1924–2010) was born in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts and was studied at Harvard and Tanglewood with Walter Piston, Irving Fine, and Aaron Copland and at Yale with Richard Donovan. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1958. Beale’s catalog includes two symphonies, a cello concerto, two string quartets, numerous chamber and solo works, and a cycle of nine piano sonatas (spanning nearly 40 years). From 1948 until his retirement in 1994, he was a member of the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music. His wife of 65 years, Jane Guthrie Beale, was a pianist, music teacher, and an active performer of her husband’s compositions.
