Description: | Today, June 21st, is the First Day of Summer - or Winter, depending on where you live!
So, for equality of weather coverage I have one piece for summer and one for winter!
This is the summer one. :-)
J. Frank Frysinger (1878–1964) was an American organist who was a student of Ralph Kinder (American) and William Wolstenholme (English).
Most of his career was centered in Pennsylvania and Illinois, although he worked in Nevada as well.
He composed about 20 organ works, some of which were very popular in his day.
Nocturne was published by J. Fischer and Bro. in 1908, and is dedicated: "To my esteemed Teacher Ralph Kinder". Kinder (1876-1952) was a well-known Philadelphia organist, with many popular compositions and successful students.
Frysinger considered "Nocturne" to be one of his best works, but critics of the time were lukewarm on it, saying that the central section was "dangerously hymn-like", which I suppose it is.
The framing sections have "typically romantic tunes," the first played upon the Swell Vox Humana, and the second upon the Solo Violoncello and Celeste.
On the last note, Frysinger calls for the addition of the 32' in the Pedal, which I did, although it's really too heavy to sound at home. :-(
Sorry about that!
That's the danger of just finding, learning and recording the music!
The music is nostalgic and serene, perhaps depicting a quiet evening in summer.
The score is attached below, as well as two photos of Frank Frysinger.
I wish everyone a very Happy Summer! |
