Jean-Adam Guilain, born in Germany, immigrated young to Paris in about 1702. He spent the rest of his life in France. His musical style is in the very French tradition. Probably his name was originally Johan Adam Wilhelm Freinsberg. He wrote eight organ pieces based on the Magnificat in the eight tonal church modes. The present one is the second tone in (hypo-) Dorian. The first foursome of these pieces, originally published in 1706, was reedited by Alexandre Guilmant in 1906.
