Description: | Bengt Hambraeus (1928–2000) — Basse de Cromorne (I) — Hommage à Clément Janequin (1981) for organ
Swedish composer Bengt Hambraeus (1928–2000) was born and educated in Stockholm. From 1957 to 1972, he held a variety of positions for the Swedish Radio where he was an active proponent of new and avant-garde music within the country. He was the first Swedish composer to write electronic music. In 1972, Hambraeus emigrated to Canada where he became professor of composition at McGill University. Although he composed works in many genres, it is his organ works for which he is most remembered. His experimental organ pieces (which he began writing in the late 1950s) were among the first works of the high modernist avant-garde, along with seminal pieces of Ligeti and Kagel. Later Hambraeus works (such as the four volume “Livre d’orgue,” written in the early 1980s in response to the installation of a French baroque style organ at McGill) took influence from older music, though in many cases still combined with a modernist perspective and avant-garde techniques.
