Suitte 1 pour le Clavessin

Pieter Bustijn (or Pierre Bustyn/Pieter Buystijn) was a Dutch baroque composer who lived from 1649 till 1729. He played the organ, harpsichord and carillon. He assumed the role of organist and carilloneur of the Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg in 1681. His 9 suites for harpsichord (IX Suittes pour le Clavessin) are the only pieces that have been discovered.

Bustijn's suites offer us an amazing look at Dutch musical life during the Baroque period and they are of great importance to the history of keyboard music in the Netherlands. Even Bach had a copy of Bustijn's work. The printed edition of the Suites was very well known in the first half of the 18th century. Even in an anthology of keyboard music, compiled by none other than Johann Gottfried Walther (1684–1748), appeared the name of Bustijn alongside names such as Buxtehude, J.L. Krebs, Bach. According to the musicologist Albert Clement (who lives in Middelburg), the style of the IX Suittes pour le Clavessin is placed between the works of earlier French masters and later German composers.

Unfortunately I don't have a harpischord at home, so a Hauptwerk organ model had to do the job. I think the quality of the music remains, even at the organ. Although the line between organ and harpischord pieces wasn't that strict in the baroque period, this suite contains some parts that probably do sound more convincing on harpischord, especially all the broken chords.
