Johann Balthasar Kehl (1725-1778) mainly received his training from 1742 under the Bayreuth court conductor Johann Pfeiffer. In 1740, he entered the service of the court as a cellist and chamber musician. After the death of Margravine Wilhelmine in 1758, Kehl devoted himself mainly to church music. In 1760, he became municipal organist in the Neustadt Church in Erlangen. Between 1759 and 1764, four books of chorale arrangements based on Protestant chorales were published, in which Kehl used Baroque stylistic elements. Kehl was university organist in Erlangen, and his duties included teaching the organ to theology students. In 1769, he was appointed court organist, and in 1774 he received the position of Bayreuth city cantor, which he held until his death in 1778.
