Karg-Elert's huge Sonatine op. 74 from 1909 is one of the most important organ works by the composer and of German Romanticism in general. It shows the composer's independent intellectual and musical world. Why he called the work ‚Sonatine‘ is something only he probably knows himself.
This piece requires a really well-equipped, German-romantic organ that can represent a broad spectrum in terms of both dynamics and richness of color. The Walcker organ at Papenburg used for this recording meets all of these requirements brilliantly. In fact, the work cries out for this organ and the organ cries out for this work. Such a symbiosis of organ music and instrument used is probably rare.
