Description:
I have no information about Jakob Bölsche. I did have a few sentences about him, but now I can not find them. :-(

He was born before 1669 and died in 1694.

From the information that I did have, the most interesting/important facts about this piece is that it is the ONLY organ work of the period written in the key of E major, excepting Buxtehude's own brilliant Prelude and Fugue in the same key.

The reason for this is surely the effect that the music makes when heard in meantone temperament!

If you were to play this in a "regular" temperament, it would sound like a fine and "normal" work, but it is in the meantone that our eyes and ears are opened WIDE!

Titled as "Preambulum," this is actually a prelude and fughetta. The prelude is a fanfare-toccata sort of thing and the brief but attractive fugue made think of the word "canzona," although this may have no accuracy.

I found this work in a fine anthology of North German free (meaning, not based on a chorale, etc.) organ works, which I attached below.

Also attached is a photo of Bölsche's manuscript, which is found in the library Yale University.

So, if you have good speakers and strong ears, than crank it up and let 'er roll!
