Composer: Flor, Christian
Sample Set: Walcker/Bornefeld organ, Schorndorf - Sonus Paradisi
Software: Hauptwerk VII
Genre: Baroque
Description:
Christian Flor (1626-1697) was a German composer and organist.
Born in Neukirchen, Flor came from a family of pastors spread throughout Schleswig-Holstein. He probably received his musical education in Hamburg and Lübeck, studying with Heinrich Scheidemann and Franz Tunder. From 1652 he was organist at St. Marien in Rendsburg. At the latest in 1654, he became organist at St. Lamberti in Lüneburg. From 1676 until his death, he was (as a predecessor of Georg Böhm) also organist at St. Johannis, the major church in Lüneburg.

Flor was widely known as an organist and organ expert. He contributed significantly to Lüneburg becoming one of the most important North German music centres of the time. Flor composed a St. Matthew Passion in 1667, which is one of the first passion oratorios in music history. Johann Sebastian Bach probably became acquainted with compositions by Flor during his stay as a student in Lüneburg. According to other sources, Bach is said to have known Flor personally and to have appreciated his compositions.

I recorded a fine fugue, it's like a canzona with three parts. In the edition that I played from are some suggestions to use the pedal in some less obvious places. I couldn't find the original manuscript, but to me it feels like a manualiter piece in which the pedal should be left out. Or only added ad libitum at the end of the piece.
