Johann Georg Schübler (1720-1755) is generally known as the engraver of the six chorales (“Schübler Choräle,” BWV 645-650) of J.S. Bach whose student he was supposedly in Leipzig.
He is little known as a composer, only this “Trio” and a fugue have survived.
The present piece draws its material from a few constantly repeating figures, but Schübler had a sense of when it was being overused.
