I have always been captivated by this piece ever since hearing the great Christopher Dearnley's recording on the organ of Salisbury Cathedral.
Written in 1895 during the latter part of his career, this Fantaisie (sometimes referred to as Fantaisie No. 2) represents a mature, more reflective phase of Saint-Saëns' organ writing compared to his earlier, more fiery 1857 fantasies.
The dreamy, lush colours and textures are captivating, whilst the third section does make you sit up and take note.
The Caen instrument is a happy bedfellow with this gorgeous and not oft-played piece.
