“O blessed night, when He was born”
based on the Danish Christmas hymn “Barn Jesus i en Krybbe laa”
Text: Hans Christian Andersen
Melody: Niels Wilhelm Gade
This Sonata in G major is based on the Danish Christmas hymn “Barn Jesus i en Krybbe laa” (1832). The simple, lyrical melody, marked by calm diatonic motion and a distinctly Nordic character, provides the thematic material for the entire composition.
The work (approx. 10 minutes) unfolds in four connected sections:
I. Festive hymn setting – The melody appears in a harmonically enriched chorale texture with expressive suspensions and organ-inspired voice leading.
II. Alternative three-part setting – A more transparent and intimate presentation, highlighting contrapuntal interplay.
III. Chorale meditation – A freer harmonic treatment that deepens the contemplative character of the hymn.
IV. Four-voice fugue – The hymn melody serves as the basis for an extended fugue, developed through contrapuntal devices and culminating in a festive conclusion.
The Sonata combines lyrical simplicity with contrapuntal craftsmanship. It is both a tribute to Andersen’s Christmas poetry and Gade’s melodic clarity, and an independent compositional exploration of the hymn material.
