Altiverb

Would anyone who is using Altiverb be willing to discuss how to implement this software in a Windows environment? Aida's use of it in conjunction with the FCC Skinner was very impressive. Thanks.

RE: Altiverb

I am also a new user of Altiverb and I would welcome information on how to best deal with input, output and mix knobs. At present I am getting overload when playing loud (near full organ) registrations back on Palace of Arts in Budapest sample set through Altiverb in Sonar Professional. I have an i7 6900 set to 10,000 polyphony and 128 GBYTES of ram. I am running Windows 10 Professional. I have discovered so far that turning down the mix knob makes the organ more present than the reverb, which is what I am after.

I was using Liquidsonics but I think Altiverb is implemented in a similar way. First you must have a VST interface between Hauptwerk and audio card (prior configure Audio Ouptut in Hauptwerk as a VST). Reaper is nice for this pourpose, you may create all the audio tracks you need, with independent levels controls and FX plugins. Reveb plugin is inserted as an FX, in any track or in the Master Track. Sorry if you already knew this part.

Would be nice if people at least said 'Thanks' or 'Sorry, we're not interested anymore'.

RE: Altiverb

I would greatly appreciate any comments from Aida regarding positioning of input/output and mix knobs, along with any other helpful hints that would guide one to her “ideal” reverb/signal mix and to avoiding distortion.

Even though I really don't like being addressed in the third person -- I'm not the Empress of China -- I don't want to be a party poop either, so here's what I can share.

I can only tell how I do it -- I only use Altiverb in Reaper for Windows.

To set the audio levels:
0) Set Hauptwerk > General Settings > Audio outputs > Speaker level adjust (I use values anywhere between -8dB and -18dB) -- in my experience this is where most distortion comes from.
1) Set Altiverb Input to slightly below maximum while giving maximum possible organ input (full organ).
2) Set Reaper Master Output to slightly below maximum.
3) After/While setting Filters (EQ/Damping) set Output to slightly below max.
4) Set Reaper Master Output to slightly below maximum.

Mix only sets the amount of reverb in relation to the input (virtual distance to the organ -- very personal).

Be careful when changing Size -- every new value creates its own standing waves. You'll need to adjust your EQ settings to compensate for that.

You can download some of my more recent settings here (I'm not sharing any final settings though, sorry): www.aida.nu/Altiverb.zip Unzip and copy them into your Documents\Reaper Media directory, or wherever you store your settings.

RE: Altiverb

What I forgot to mention:
- Reaper Master Output level as well as the output level of the Track carrying the Altverb plugin, have to be just under or around 0 (not 'max.' as in +12dB!)
- It might be wise to keep Altiverb Input and Output at the bottom of the yellow as well.
- Also the more you emphasize the higher frequencies, the sooner distortion is likely to occur. Don't forget that reverb ALWAYS dampens the higher frequencies most.

RE: Altiverb

Aida, great to know! I will be able to experiment with these settings in the next few days and having this guidance is incredibly helpful.
