The sortie is the last piece form the Messe Basse (Low Mass) op.30. So, it was composed at the same period than the 3rd symphonie op. 28 and the 24 pièces en style libre op.31.
It is a kind of toccata, a dark and restless ride but a few heavy clashing chords in the middle. It could be seen as a sister of the third piece from Schumann’s op 32 n°3 (see page 8 of the linked pdf if you like))
