In 1917, Ropartz wrote a set of three meditations for organ. This one is the first one of the set, in b flat minor.
As usual, Ropartz took much care of hiding his joy :-), although the last part goes b flat major.
It's a dark piece, with several occurences of repeated bass notes which sound like a knell.
IMHO, the grumbling foundations of St-Ouen (as emulated by Aristide n°1) suit very well the dark atmosphere of this piece.
