Alfred Hollins (1865-1942) was a noted English organist who was blind from birth. Based in Scotland, he gave many concert tours around the world: it is estimated that he traveled some 600,000 miles on his travels over the course of his life! The second Concert Overture in C minor (first published in 1899, and dedicated to Clarence Eddy) reveals his ability to write ‘orchestral’ music for the organ. Cyril Rootham is alleged to have written to Hollins, “You know that is a splendid overture, but it isn’t organ music. I hear the fiddles in it.”
This work has long been one of my favorite organ pieces, and as I have spent the past few months immersed in Victorian organ music, the time was right to dust it off and unleash it on the Hereford Sampleset :)
