Charles Paterson (b. 1954) was born in Ipswich, England and was singing, playing, and writing music from an early age. From Ipswich School he went on to a Choral Exhibition at Christ’s College, Cambridge, then taught at Tiffin School, Kingston upon Thames, followed by 25 years at Leicester Grammar School where he trained and conducted the Leicester Grammar School Choir. For ten years, he was musical director of the Humberstone Choral Society and for twelve years was director of the Wyvern Singers. Paterson also served as a “songman” (lay clerk) in the choir of Leicester Cathedral. Upon retirement from teaching, he moved to the Isle of Wight and along with directing several choirs (Cantus Vesperi and Orpheus Singers), he revived his interest in early music as member of the ensemble Fresh Ayre, in which he has played varied early instruments. As a composer, his output includes choral and vocal works, instrumental pieces, and several pieces for small orchestra.
