For most of us in the UK, until 2022 we had only known one monarch; a coronation and its music were to be found only in ancient newsreels featuring our much-loved Queen. But this year we witnessed all the pomp and ceremony of a live coronation, including the large range of music that has been written specially for coronations over the years.
'I was glad' is one such special piece and it is the anthem that was sung as the new King processed into Westminster Abbey ('I was glad when they said unto me, "we will go into the house of the Lord" ').
The splendid organ and sample set of Regensburg St Peter's Cathedral have all the resources needed to evoke the atmosphere in Westminster Abbey that day, the acoustics and the range of musicians - choirs, organ, orchestra and trumpeters - that performed this anthem.
The 'vivats' (long live the King) are altered at each coronation to fit with the name of the Sovereign and where appropriate their consort. The vivats in this recording are those for this year's coronation; as shown in the attached PDF.
