Joseph Reveyron was born in Lyons on September 2nd, 1917, He studed organ, harmony and counterpoint with Eduoard Commette (1883-1967). Having hels the post of organist at Notre-Dame de la Mulatière, he was appointed Commette's assistant at the Primatiale Saint-Jean in Lyons in 1954. When his teacher died, he became his successor as "titulaire".
These pieces, the "Versets pour un orgue ancien" borrow from 17th and 18th century masters in terms of their tone-color and their idiom without being abjectly derivative. They preserve their harmonic autonomy, and the 20th-century organist dedicates these pieces - first and foremost a respectful salutation - with a smile to the magnificent musicians of those former times.
