The Angelus is a Catholic devotion commemorating the Incarnation of Christ, traditionally recited in response to the ringing of church bells. Growing up in Ireland I heard this daily on our national broadcasters, and it continues today.
This work was composed towards the end of Stanford's life and career, as it was first published in 1930, several years after his death in 1924 - I have previously played "By the Sea Shore" here, and look forward to completing the set soon with "In the Country"
The Angelus consists of a series of verses and responses that reflect on the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive Jesus, followed by the prayer "Hail Mary" interspersed throughout the recitation.
In his score Stanford calls for just a solo flute where I have chosen to use the Billerbeck Chimes - I have to imagine Stanford might have done so if he had access to a percussive stop (and hope he doesn't mind my addition!)
