Description:
Franz Liszt / Otto Nicolai — Ein feste Burg:
The Communion Within

This performance concludes my Resonances Reimagined series with a work that is itself the product of reimagining.

Otto Nicolai called his original composition an “Ecclesiastical Festival Overture” on Martin Luther’s Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott. Franz Liszt subsequently transcribed the work for organ, where it appears simply as “Ouverture.” Here, that chain of transformation continues through the sound world of the historic Buckow/Rieger organ of St. Andrew’s Church in Komárom, sampled by Augustine’s Virtual Organs—an instrument Liszt himself knew and played.

Within the larger journey of Resonances Reimagined, however, this work gradually assumed another meaning.

The final four performances trace an inward journey:

Lament → Resonance → Presence → Communion

A solitary voice first cries for the dead. The absent persist as echoes and memory. Memory becomes presence. And here, finally, the voice that first cried alone discovers others around it.

Nicolai’s musical architecture makes that interpretation unexpectedly tangible. The chorale first stands before us alone. Fugal voices begin to gather. Fanfare material joins them. The chorale returns as an echo. Eventually these once-separate musical identities coexist, building toward a conclusion not merely of strength, but of collective celebration.

The fortress thus becomes more than a symbol of defense. It becomes a place of belonging—a space inhabited by memory, relationship, confidence, and joy.

Nothing has to surrender its identity in order to belong.

The monument may stand outside.

The fortress is built within.
