This piece could be described as half-way beetween two typical mendelssohnian genres : song without words and scherzo.
The first part presents the song-scherzo gently rollicking theme. In the second part, there is an alternation beetween a kind of choral rather stiff and fragments of the song-scherzo theme. An in the third part, all vanishes progressively in a very "midsummer night' spirit.
It gives the oppurtunity to use the numerous solo reed stops of Salisbury (orchestral oboe, oboe, clarinet, english horn...).
The transcription has been made by a M. W.A.C. Cruickshank (unknown to me)
