Description: | My second regular upload.
Franz Schmidt's Hallelujah Prelude in D-major is part of the 4 Small Preludes & Fugues by Schmidt, available in manuscript on IMSLP. It starts ff and builds up to fff at the end.
A peculiarity of the piece is the composer's indication that it should be played very freely (Sehr frei vorzutragen). I'm never very bothered with what composers say they want, I always try to re-create a piece, but in this case I wonder why organists take so little of the liberty offered by Schmidt himself to make something original/personal out of this Prelude. Most organists play it practically as written, in particular the accelerations, which are written out in note values.
At the end the composer says Nicht zurückhalten (Non ritardando), but I think that does not apply when the Fugue is omitted. So I do 'ritard'.
I play the entire piece with almost all 32', 16' and 8' stops in the pedals. Both Contrebombarde 32' stops though I've saved for the last chord. The second Contrebombarde 32' enters half-way the chord where Schmidt adds an A on top of the bottom D. That huge stop more than compensates for the A that I left out, I'd say.
Warning: I did some voicing on this 'set', especially on the 8' flues and the chamades.
NO REVERB ADDED!
