Description: | Grieg wrote the "Holberg Suite" to celebrate the 200th "birthday" of the Danish philososopher Ludvig Holberg, first for the piano and then for string orchestra.
It was intended to be a suite in the ancient style (Bach, Haendel, Telemann, Rameau...). In fact, it's unmistakably Grieg, a dreamed romantic evocation of the early 18th and not at all a strict "à la manière de".
The Air, the 5th part of the suite, exposes a delicate haunting melody. The registrations were choosed on the (most) romantic side, as is the music itself. As far as I could see, it hasn't been uploaded on CCH before.
The transcription - by Christopher Eva - is included in "A Grieg organ album" edited by OUP. |
