„Parsifal“ Prelude Act 1

Parsifal, the last opera by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), has often been performed on Good Fridays as a sort of secular Lent music. In act three, the topic of the Holy Communion plays an important role. So the theme that sounds right at the beginning of the prelude as a solo is later sung by a choir with the - slightly altered - words of institution.
Another theme (the „leitmotif“ for the holy grail, introduced at 3:56) is the famous „Dresden amen“, being part of both roman catholic and protestant liturgy in Saxony. Originally, it was composed by J.G. Naumann (1741-1801) but later often used as musical material not only by R. Wagner, but also by F.M. Mendelssohn, A. Bruckner, G. Mahler and many other composers.
Here, I play the arrangement by Erwin Horn, published by Butz Musikverlag, BM143484. Years ago, I received a copy of the hand written sheet music by the himself after a concert, so I don’t know if this is a 100% indentical with the text published later. Like in earlier adaptions for organ of this prelude, e.g. by Sigrid Karg-Elert, Horn repeats the „Dresden amen“ for a third time to end the piece in the tonic A flat major.
For this type of symphonic music, the sample set of the Chemnitz Sauer organ seemed to me well suited because of the various tonal colours, especially in the strings and the soft reeds. Enjoy and have a silent Holy Week.
